WASHINGTON, D.C. — On April 26, Rep. Judy Chu (CA-28) voted against H.R. 2811, which passed 217-215. Prior to her vote, she spoke in opposition to the measure on the House floor.

“I voted against this irresponsible bill that would devastate millions of seniors, workers, families, and veterans,” said Rep. Chu. “If Republicans get their way, this scheme will force the Social Security Administration to close field offices that seniors and people with disabilities rely on for services. Across the nation, nearly 500,000 low-income families could be evicted from voucher-supported housing, and 200,000 young children will lose spots in Head Start. Cruel new barriers to TANF will mean grandparents who rely on the program to keep their grandchildren out of foster care will lose crucial resources. And at the same time, Republicans’ bill would cut law enforcement funding Democrats previously secured and give wealthy tax cheats license to once again avoid paying the taxes they owe.”

In California, the House Republican plan, if passed into law, would:

  • Put 2,673,000 people at risk of losing Medicaid coverage;
  • Threaten access to food assistance for 136,000 people aged 50-55;
  • Eliminate preschool and child care for at least 35,200 children;
  • Increase housing costs for at least 83,200 people; and
  • Make college more expensive for at least 874,300 students.
“In exchange for over a decade of crippled government, Republicans would give us less than one year of reprieve from default and economic catastrophe. Republicans should do what they did three times under President Trump and pass a clean bill, free of brutal cuts,” concluded Rep. Chu.

By refusing to act now to prevent a default, House Republicans are threatening an economic disaster that will hurt everyday Americans. In the 28th congressional district of California, a default on our debt would:

  • Kill 7,000 jobs as national unemployment doubles;
  • Threaten the retirement savings of 102,700 people near retirement;
  • Put Medicare, Medicaid, and Veterans Affairs health benefits at risk for 271,000 people; and
  • Jeopardize Social Security payments for 77,000 families.
Alternatively, President Biden’s budget reduces deficits by $3 trillion more over the next 10 years while investing in America – lowering costs by making child care, health care, and housing more affordable, supporting better schools, and strengthening our infrastructure.
