EL PASO, TEXAS — On May 26, Reps. Judy Chu (CA-28) joined Reps. Veronica Escobar (TX-16), Madeleine Dean (PA-04), Sara Jacobs (CA-51), and Andrea Salinas (OR-06) for a press conference following their congressional delegation visit to U.S. Customs and Border Protection facilities at the border with Mexico.
“I was also very moved to see,” Rep. Chu said about one aspect of her visit, “that [CBP] had implemented something just a year ago, which was to separate LGB and trans people [from others in facilities]. We were able to talk to a few of them who had escaped such terrible discrimination in their home countries.”
Rep. Chu contrasted her visit today to her last to El Paso facilities in 2018 during the last administration. She explained about the treatment of asylum-seekers and migrants: “This is a world of difference today, but there is so much more that needs to be done.”
